Before your first cup

How is matcha different from loose-leaf tea?

Matcha is powdered green tea that you whisk into water. Loose-leaf tea is steeped in water, then you strain out the leaves before drinking.

What equipment do I need?

A bowl and bamboo whisk are enough to get started. A fine-mesh strainer helps break up clumps, and a scale helps you measure the powder.

How should I store my matcha?

Keep it in a tightly sealed, opaque container, away from heat, direct sunlight, moisture, and strong smells. Follow the storage instructions on your package.
